Merchandising
A day in the life of a Shelf Service merchandiser
The role of a merchandiser goes far beyond installing POS materials in stores. Anticipation, strategic thinking, execution and adaptability are essential to ensuring flawless implementation. As a key link between commercial strategy and its concrete execution at the point of sale, merchandisers are part of a powerful team of 120 permanent and 300 flexible employees at Shelf Service. Together, they carry out no fewer than 2,500 store visits every week across the Belgian and Luxembourgish markets. It is a hands-on profession driven by passion, one that brings a real sense of pride and fulfilment at the end of every mission.
Preparation in advance
A merchandiser’s day starts early. Today, the first stop is Carrefour Hypermarket in Korbeek-Lo. With his PDA in hand, he reviews his planograms and visit instructions. The store’s checkout counters have not even opened yet, while he is already busy placing the CashPoint coupon booklets before installing other POS materials. Briefed in advance by the team supervisor, he carries out his work according to a precise and efficient approach.
Technical expertise in service of brands
After successfully completing the first mission, we head to Delhaize Kessel-Lo to install specific MMD materials: wobblers, 3D side flags and a range of other POS materials. Here, every detail matters, as an incorrectly positioned element can compromise the visual impact of a campaign. The merchandiser compares the reality on the shop floor with the guidelines provided, corrects any deviations on site and communicates information in real time via their PDA. More than simply an executor, the merchandiser acts as the link between strategy and what shoppers actually see on the shelves. Without them, even the best campaign would never come to life. The merchandiser also ensures promotional compliance and adherence to the planogram—two essential elements in supporting sales. Their intervention improves shelf visibility and increases the conversion rate of promotional activities. In the short term, this boosts promotional sales; in the medium term, it contributes to greater market share and increased customer loyalty.
Working at large-scale retail level
Once we arrive at Aveve Wilsele, just a few kilometres further, the challenge takes on a different dimension: working in a large-scale retail environment with its specific layouts and spaces. The assignment is to install Purina materials according to the instructions provided via the PDA. Maintaining the same high standard of execution across hundreds of points of sale, regardless of store format or local constraints—that is the true challenge of large-scale field execution.
This is expertise that every merchandiser develops on the job, but also through the Shelf Academy. This comprehensive training programme helps onboard new employees, provides additional training and equips merchandisers to manage a wide variety of assignments while meeting customer expectations.
Presence across a wide range of sectors
The afternoon highlights the versatility of the merchandiser. First stop: DreamLand Tielt-Winge, where he installs Lego displays, followed by Medi-Market, where he installs a tester, wobblers, posters on shopping baskets and flyers on a totem in the parapharmacy. Two radically different environments, with the same high standards of execution.
Shelf Service operates across a wide range of sectors - from toys to beauty, from food to DIY - and works with four major retail networks: MMD, Unlimitail, Intermarché and Medi-Market. This sectoral diversity provides an in-depth understanding of the expectations of each retail chain and its shoppers. The role requires both precision and flexibility, as every store has its own constraints. Maintaining consistent execution quality across so many locations is a daily challenge. Differences in store formats and retailer guidelines, staff turnover and the level of autonomy of store teams, logistical constraints and promotional calendars, variations in shopper traffic and the quality of field data—all these factors add to the need for smooth communication between merchandisers and on-site teams to ensure quick and effective action.
The visible impact of a well-executed campaign
The final stop of the day: Hubo in Tielt-Winge, for the execution of a Grohé campaign. Promotional installations and product highlighting completely transform the shelf: a structured presentation, POS elements installed with precision and a clearly visible brand identity. The contrast between before and after perfectly illustrates the role of the merchandiser: bringing a commercial strategy to life all the way to the final metres of the customer journey.
The interaction with the store manager brings the visit to a close, with shared satisfaction and field feedback entered into the system. It is a key moment that highlights another important dimension of the profession: human relationships. During every intervention, the merchandiser interacts with store managers, shelf teams and department heads. Building relationships based on trust makes it easier to resolve unexpected situations on the ground. Merchandisers are assigned to their own region, allowing them to build lasting relationships with store staff. They are not anonymous service providers; they become part of the day-to-day environment of the retail chains. Spread across Belgium, they know their area inside out and can minimise travel times. This combination of national scale and local field expertise makes Shelf Service a reference in its sector. From Carrefour to Hubo, via Delhaize, Aveve, DreamLand and Medi-Market, this day illustrates what Shelf Service has stood for for 35 years: excellence in field execution in the service of brands and retailers. Behind every well-organised shelf, every flawlessly installed display and every campaign that catches the shopper’s eye at first glance, there is the passion of a merchandiser who makes a difference where it truly matters: at the heart of the point of sale. They are the ones who bring strategy to life in the store.
